About this trip

Akwaaba! Welcome to A Trip Off The Old Block to Ghana, West Africa for the 10th Year Anniversary of the Chale Wote Festival, an international celebration of the arts, history, culture and people of Jamestown, Ghana and the entire African Diaspora! And welcome to our partnership with Dating the African Diaspora in Ghana and our Artist in Residency Program!

Officially noted from the year 1619 in Virginia, 2019 was the 400th Anniversary of the TransAtlantic slave trade in North America. Many African Diasporans' ancestors walked through “The Door of No Return” and boarded slave ships, barely surviving the Middle Passage; but many did survive and now, we are returning to reconnect with the Motherland, to remember an ancient past, far beyond the tragedy of the slave trade, and to share our own brilliant, creative stories of survival, resilience and even joy on foreign shores. Our ancestors may have left Africa but Africa never left us!

The Chale Wote Festival originated in Jamestown, Ghana, and is a wonderful, multi-day event filled with activities including digital labs, headwrapping workshops, theatre, film, dancing, a Grand Durbar (the procession of the Kings and Royal families where you will see gold like never before), fabulous food and so much more!

We will attend a number of the festivities of the Chale Wote Festival and we will also be exploring places such as Osu, Independence Square, the National monument honoring Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, the W.E.B. DuBois Center (his final resting place), Cape Coast and Elmina Slave Castles and surrounding Villages, including the "last bath" where those enslaved were bathed in a river in Assin Manso. You will also test your fears on the Kakum National Park canopy walk! We will visit Kumasi - the capital city of the Ashanti Kingdom where many artists live and create kente cloth, Adinkra stamps and cloth, djembe drums, royal stools tie dye fabric, etc., the Volta River Region and the Akwamu Kingdom and Palace Museum, and the great, modern clubs, nightlife, beaches and malls in Ghana!

Come with us to not only one of the most beautiful, ancient and creative civilizations in the world; but also one of the best, artistic and cultural celebrations on the planet!
