About this trip

Akwaaba! Welcome to A Trip Off The Old Block to Ghana, West Africa for PANAFEST, an international celebration of the arts, history, culture and people of Ghana and the entire African Diaspora! And welcome to our partnership with Dating the African Diaspora in Ghana!

Officially noted from the year 1619 in Virginia, 2019 is the 400th Anniversary of the TransAtlantic slave trade in North America. Many African Americans’ ancestors walked through “The Door of No Return” and boarded slave ships, barely surviving the Middle Passage; but many did survive and now, we are returning to reconnect with the Motherland, to remember an ancient past, far beyond the tragedy of the slave trade, and to share our own brilliant, creative stories of survival, resilience and even joy on foreign shores. Our ancestors may have left Africa but Africa never left us!

PANAFEST is a wonderful, multi-day event filled with activities, including a Pan-African conference, theatre, film, dancing, the Grand Durbar (the procession of the Kings and Royal families where you will see gold like never before), fabulous food and so much more!

We will attend many of the festivities of PANAFEST and we will also be exploring places such as Osu, the National monument honoring Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, the W.E.B. DuBois Center (his final resting place), Kumasi - the capital cory of the Ashanti Kingdom where many artists live and create kente cloth, djembe drums, royal stools tie dye fabric, etc., the Volta River Region, Cape Coast and Elmina Slave Castles and the great, modern clubs, nightlife and beaches in Ghana!

Come with us to not only one of the most beautiful, ancient and creative civilizations in the world; but also one of the best, artistic and cultural celebrations on the planet!

*** Please note: You MUST be physically healthy enough to stand and walk during tours, outings and excursions. This trip would not be comfortable and we are not equipped to handle persons with physical challenges that would hamper breathing, climbing steps, standing, kneeling, walking for 10 minutes straight or more, etc. It would not be fair to you, the host or the rest of the group. Ghana is still a developing country and would not be able to properly accommodate you. We regret the lack of capacity at this time.
